WHAT OUR COLLEAGUES SAY:

“...thank you for the work you put into writing the text. ...I can say with great certainty that this is the most fun I have had teaching calculus in the entire 10 years I have taught either AB or BC. Furthermore, I feel that my students are understanding the concepts better than they ever have and will be prepared to answer the types of conceptual questions asked on the AP test...”

Calculus -- Concepts
and Calculators Second Edition

One of the approved texts for the AP Audit,
this best selling book focuses
on conceptual understanding and thinking skills.

by George Best, Stephen Carter and
Douglas Crabtree
This book – like the first edition – focuses on conceptual understanding and thinking skills. The graphing calculator is an integral part of the text and allows students to manipulate and compare graphical, numerical and algebraic representations of the ideas. The text is designed to include the best aspects of calculus reform along with the goals and well established methods of traditional calculus. This book would be an excellent text to use in either a Calculus AB or BC course.

The acceptance and response from our first edition has been most gratifying and we have incorporated many of the changes that teachers have recommended in this new edition. The most significant modification has been the addition of three new chapters. The first 9 chapters of this second edition focus on material specified by the current AB calculus course description; Chapters 10, 11 and 12, the new chapters, include the remaining topics for BC calculus. Chapter 10 introduces L’Hopital’s Rule, improper fractions and partial fractions; Taylor polynomials and the approximation of functions using power series are the main topics in Chapter 11; Chapter 12 treats parametric equations, vector and polar coordinates with the support of technology.

While the text is not limited to AP topics, the experience of the authors as AP readers and consultants for the College Board ensure that the book aligns with current AP philosophy, preparing students for the AP exam like no other text. For example, the nontraditional approach in Chapter 11, “Taylor Polynomials and Series,” is a major strength of the text and reflects the strategy described in the current AP calculus course description.
